Reducing the waste impact of local events is important because it:
SAVES ENERGY by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from producing/mining new materials
EXTENDS THE LIFE OF THE LANDFILL by diverting recyclables and compostables
REDUCES LANDFILL EMISSIONS by reducing organic waste in the landfill which degrades anaerobically and creates methane
STORES CARBON IN THE SOIL since compost enhances the soil’s capacity to sequester carbon, drawing down atmospheric carbon through healthier soils
Lake County Event Requirements
Lake County encourages recycling regardless of event size, but events over 500 participants that serve food or drink are required to have recycling through the County’s Special Event Permitting process. County requirements include:
A 1:1 ratio of trash to recycling containers- we recommend placing a recycling bin next to every trash bin. We also recommend one set of bins for every 50 individuals.
Type of recycling required:
Mixed containers (aluminum, glass and plastic bottles)
Cardboard
A plan for recycling that includes hauling and overnight bear-proof storage if applicable.
You must have a written waste plan that includes trash and recycling hauling and overnight bear-proof storage if applicable, though we also advise you to consider including food scrap composting in your plan.
Event Resources
For no charge, you can rent collapsible waste stations from Cloud City Conservation Center for use at events in Lake County. We recommend one set of waste stations for every 50 people. Use them at your event, drop-off the recyclables at the Lake County Landfill & Recycling Center, then return clean bins to C4! Please review our waste station rental form for more details.
