Environmental Justice, Climate Justice and Food Justice do not come without Racial Justice.
There is no avoiding the dramatic tension of the world right now. Amidst the backdrop of a pandemic that has taken the lives of over 100,000 people in our country, we have yet again lifted the veil to a system that has cost the lives of our Black, Brown and Indigenous community members. It is critical that we all take a moment to pause, grieve, reflect and find our own ways to contribute to anti-racism work in our communities.
Here at Cloud City Conservation Center, we have participated in the Colorado Trust’s Equity Training, Lake County Build A Generation’s Resilient Lake County program, and most recently Soul Fire Farm’s Uprooting Racism in the Food System training. Our work does not stop there because we understand that Environmental, Climate, and Food justice cannot exist without Racial Justice. This is just the beginning- educating ourselves and making change in our community is an ongoing process.
Communities of color are disproportionately more likely than white Americans to be concerned about- and affected by- climate change. Race is the number one indicator for the placement of toxic facilities in our country which leads to poor air quality, putting residents at higher risk for contracting Coronavirus. The USDA estimates that 22.5% of African-American households and 18.5% of Hispanic/Latinx households have food insecurity, both of which are dramatically higher than the national average of 12.3%. While our work focuses on Lake County residents, we also advocate for policies and partnerships with organizations on a state and national level. If we only improve conditions for our community we have not adequately addressed these issues.
Racial injustice is a story as old as time but right now it feels so overwhelming you don’t know where to start to be involved. We support those in our community who have been protesting peacefully on Harrison. We support our community partners who have been, or are beginning to do the necessary equity work. We support those of you who are able to financially support organizations across the country doing Racial Justice work.
Cloud City Conservation Center is small but we are committed to doing the best we can to support both those in our community and nationwide who are advocating for Racial Justice. We are committed to educating our staff and our community about how our work intersects with Racial Justice. We are also making some changes to our programming.
Our Weekly Farm Market is now entirely donation based. This means that we have a suggested price but encourage you to pay what works best for your family right now because we believe that healthy food should be accessible for everyone in our community. Moving forward, we will evaluate our programs and actions to ensure that we are working towards Racial Justice within our work towards Climate Justice, Environmental Justice and Food Justice. And we will continue to share this work publicly with you.
This is not political- this is simply motivated by the fact that our mission “to inspire stewardship of our natural resources by creating educational opportunities and lasting community infrastructure in Leadville and Lake County” cannot be achieved without Racial Justice. Our community and our country can and must do better.

La Justicia Ambiental, la Justicia Climática y la Justicia Alimentaria no suceden sin la Justicia Racial
No se puede evitar la tensión dramática del mundo en este momento. En medio del telón de fondo de una pandemia que ha cobrado la vida de más de 100,000 personas en nuestro país, una vez más hemos levantado el velo a un sistema que ha costado la vida de los miembros de nuestra comunidad negra, moreno e indígena. Es fundamental que todos nos tomemos un momento para hacer una pausa, llorar, reflexionar y encontrar nuestras propias formas de contribuir al trabajo contra el racismo en nuestras comunidades.
Aquí, en Cloud City Conservation Center, hemos participado en la Capacitación sobre Equidad de Colorado Trust, el programa Resilient Lake County de Lake County Build A Generation y, más recientemente, en la capacitación de Soul Fire Farm’s Uprooting Racism in the Food System. Nuestro trabajo no se detiene ahí porque entendemos que la justicia ambiental, climática y alimentaria no puede existir sin la justicia racial. Apoyamos a nuestros socios comunitarios que han estado o están comenzando a hacer el trabajo de equidad necesario. Apoyamos a aquellos de ustedes que pueden apoyar financieramente a organizaciones en todo el país que realizan trabajos de Justicia Racial.
Cloud City Conservation Center es pequeño pero estamos comprometidos a hacer lo mejor que podamos para apoyar tanto a aquellos en nuestra comunidad como a nivel nacional que abogan por la Justicia Racial.
