Climate Change:

The state of Colorado wrote its first Climate Action Plan in 2007. This was updated by Governor Hickenlooper in 2018. The Plan addresses a diverse array of sectors in our state. For an in depth report on climate resilience from the Union of Concerned Scientist, go here.

What will the impacts of climate change be in Colorado?

350 Colorado is a local chapter of the global organization, 350.org, building a movement to solve the climate crisis. They have clearly mapped out what some of the impacts of climate change will be in Colorado.

Colorado State Forest Service outlines the role of forests in climate change and how they will be affected.

Wester Water Assessment compiles multiple studies to paint a picture of the intermountain west warming by +2°F to +6.5°F by mid-century.

How can I calculate the carbon impact of my lifestyle?

Here’s the best tool available to see how your family compares to the average in your location and income bracket. Better yet, it’s a way to track which changes to your lifestyle will make the biggest difference. It’s made by the Cool Climate Network, a project of UC Berkeley.

What can I do to combat the change?

Zero Waste: Refuse, Reduce, Repair, Reuse, then Recycle. Here’s a great video making the connection between waste and climate change from Eco-Cycle in Boulder. Check out C4’s zero waste resources in Lake County.

Compost: Food scraps, grass clippings, and other organic waste can either be properly converted into carbon-sequestering nutritious compost or deposited in a landfill where anaerobic decomposition creates methane gas, a greenhouse gas 30 times more potent then carbon dioxide. Join the Community Composting Program at C4.

Energy Efficiency: Reduce your home’s carbon footprint and lower your heating bills at the same time. Sign up for a Home Energy Assessment through C4.

Local Food: Does what we choose to eat impact climate change? Yes, it does! Our food systems contribute one quarter of the manmade greenhouse gasses emitted. Here are 7 actions you can take to fight climate change with your fork from Slow Food USA. From the David Suzuki Foundation, we have 4 questions to ask before planning a meal or sitting down in a restaurant. If you’re interested in local food in Lake County, check out the Cloud City Farm.
